According to a study published in Patient Education and Counselling, women had varying preferences and experiences in receiving breast density information. Breast density notifications aim to educate women about the risks of high breast density. Dense breasts have high fibroglandular tissue than fatty breasts, as seen in a mammogram.

Researchers conducted a national telephone survey of large diverse sample of American women and qualitative interviews to examine women’s preferences and experiences in receiving breast density information.

The study found that most women (80%) preferred learning of personal breast density from providers. Women with low literacy preferred receiving less often from the providers and more often in the form of written notification. On the other hand, women with higher literacy preferred learning through an online portal.

According to researchers, the findings imply how the breast density education materials are being delivered, and current notifications may not meet the needs or preferences of all women, especially women with lower literacy or women of colour.

These findings further support the importance of ensuring delivery of health information to all populations in a consumer preferred manner which will also help in making breast screening decisions.
