If you find a breast lump, make an appointment with your doctor within a week or two. Whether you think the lump is cancerous or not, it is important to get it checked by a doctor as soon as possible, as not all women experience the same symptoms of breast cancer.
Do not wait long to make an appointment, especially if:
- The lump feels firm or fixed
- You observe skin changes such as redness, dimpling, crusting or puckering
- The lump is in your armpit, which seems to be getting bigger
- Your nipple is turned inward
- There is a discharge from your nipple, possibly bloody
During your appointment, your doctor will perform a physical exam to evaluate the breast lump.
If you are under 30 years old, are still having periods and have just noticed the lump, your doctor may ask you to return for another examination after your next period. In some cases, your doctor might refer you to a specialist breast clinic.
