In a recent study published in PLOS Medicine, it was reported that artificial sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame-K in particular, were associated with increased risk of developing cancer.
Research has found that in higher consumers of artificial sweeteners the overall risk of cancer was greater than non-consumers. In particular these artificial sweeteners elevated the risks for breast cancer and obesity related cancers.
The report concluded with not recommending the usage of artificial sweeteners as safe replacement for sugar in foods or beverages and aims to educate public with relevant complete information about artificial sweeteners and their potential adverse health effects.
