Diabetes Risk Reduction Diet May Lower Breast Cancer

Adherence to diabetes risk reduction diet (DRRD) can lower breast cancer risk, according to a recent study. So, it may be prudent to eat wisely, and avail dual benefits!

The diet that seemed to decrease the risk of diabetes included foods (DRRD) with lower glycemic index (the ability to cause spike in blood sugar), low trans-fat, sugar-sweetened beverages/fruit juices, and red/processed meat, and high intake of cereal fiber, coffee, nuts, and whole fruits; and a higher ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fat.

The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, evaluated the association between adherence to DRRD and the incidence of breast cancer. This study followed 88,739 women from the Nurses’ Health Study and 93,915 women from the NHS II. The incidence of breast cancer cases was evaluated using medical records. The association of diet and breast cancer risk factors were evaluated in the follow-up questionnaires.

It was found that the participants who followed the DRRD had a lower risk of breast cancer risk. This implies that women who followed a healthy diet, in addition to lowering their diabetes risk, also lowered their breast cancer risk. The risk-lowering effect could be a result of the balanced intake of nutrients and less weight gain.
