Lotus leaf extracts may hold potential for breast cancer treatment

Lotus is not only an attractive flower, but it may also hold potential for becoming a treatment option for breast cancer soon. A latest study reported that the lotus leaf extract inhibits the cell migration and spead to other body parts (metastasis) in a certain type of breast cancer, the estrogen receptor negative (ER−) breast cancer.

The study, published in the journal Nutrition and Metabolism (Lond)., aimed to evaluate the effect of lotus leaf alcohol extract (LAE) on the spread of ER− breast cancer. These preliminary studies were done in the laboratory.

The results showed that lotus extracts significantly inhibited spread of breast cancer cells. Although these are early results, and there is along way to go before the lotus extracts can be tested for humans with breast cancer, the study results give a hope that there could be a natural and safe treatment for breast cancer.
