According to the latest news published by the BBC, an Indian company has developed a non-invasive test that uses thermal imaging and artificial intelligence (AI). This test is cheaper when compared to other available breast cancer screening procedures.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women in low- and middle-income countries. However, screening programmes for early detection are rare.
AI has already been applied to radiology for breast cancer detection in screening mammography programs. Although mammography is still the gold standard for breast cancer detection, it is hoped that this test might help spot some early cancers in people who might not otherwise have access to mammography screenings. This test is just for detection purposes and not for diagnosis.
