Sedentary Work Is Associated With Increased Risk Of Breast Cancer —–
A new study published in Journal of Occupational Health found that sedentary work is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. The aim of this analysis was to assess the contribution of sedentary work to breast cancer risk.
A sedentary lifestyle is becoming increasingly common, and it is estimated that the average person spends 7 to 8 hours of their time sitting. Concurrently, there has been a rise in health consequences such as weight gain, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and cancer.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and the leading cause of cancer‐related deaths in women worldwide. Breast cancer is an obesity‐related type of cancer, and a sedentary lifestyle and physical inactivity greatly increases the risk of obesity.
For this study, literature from multiple research papers and surveys were pooled together and analysed. It was found that sedentary behaviour, especially related to occupation was associated with a 15.5% increased risk of breast cancer. The association between breast cancer and sedentary work was found to be consistent even when accounting for potentially confounding risk factors such as body mass index, menopausal status or the use of hormone replacement therapy.
Therefore, the findings of this study suggest that it is essential to reduce the sedentary time spent at work to reduce risk of developing breast cancer. Further, it is necessary to secure time for leisure and physical activity among sedentary workers as a primary preventive measure.
