A recent study published in the ‘Journal of clinical Rehabilitation’, revealed that patient education has a significant impact on short-term global quality of life and emotional quality of life in breast cancer survivors.
This systematic literature review included data from PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Cochrane Plus, PEDro, Dialnet and Clinicaltrials.gov databases with an aim to evaluate the effect of patient education on improvement of quality of life, pain and fatigue in breast cancer survivors, either when used alone or as an adjunctive therapy.
A total of 14 studies were identified with 1749 breast cancer survivors, out of which 12 of them were analyzed. The results showed that there were statistically significant short-term benefits for improved global quality of life, emotional quality of life and fatigue as a result of patient education in these breast cancer survivors. No significant benefits were observed for pain severity and fear of recurrence.
Therefore, the results of the study suggest that patient education for breast cancer survivors is beneficial in improving fatigue, short-term global quality of life, and emotional quality of life.
