There is a significant association between occupational exposure to organic solvents and increased risk of breast cancer, as reported by a recent study published in the ‘Journal of Environmental Science and Pollution Research’. Organic solvents are carbon-based chemical substances, which can be toxic for the body.

Many recent studies have suggested that organic solvent exposure may be closely associated with breast cancer, although evidence remains uncertain and questionable. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the existing epidemiological evidence to determine the association between occupational organic solvent exposure and breast cancer.

Data was collected from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases, to identify case-control and cohort studies that focused on occupational exposure to organic solvents and incidence of breast cancer.

The pooled odds ratio of breast cancer among workers exposed to organic solvents was 1.18 when compared to those who were not exposed. Both cohort and case-control studies observed a significant relationship between organic solvent exposure and breast cancer. Postmenopausal women exposed to organic solvents were also at an increased risk of breast cancer.

Thus, the results of the study indicated that occupational exposure to organic solvents can increase the risk of breast cancer.
