Mind -Body Exercise Can Improve Breast Cancer-Related Fatigue ——

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant tumours in women and biggest killer in women with cancer. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a feeling of exhaustion that is experienced during cancer or cancer treatment, which doesn’t get better with rest. Many breast cancer patients have CRF levels higher than normal. A higher level of fatigue has been linked to lower survival rates.

Presently, the treatments for CRF include drug management, massage, and acupuncture. A new review published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary Alternative Medicine aimed to systematically evaluate the intervention effect of mind-body exercise on cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer patients.

Mind-body exercise (MBE) is a mental and physical interaction therapy that promotes physical and mental health through asana, pranayama, relaxation, and meditation such as Tai Chi and Yoga.

This review included data from many randomized controlled trials sourced from reputed journals and libraries. Collectively, 16 papers were included with a total of 1133 patients. The results of this study showed that doing MBE for over 40 minutes per session for at least 6 weeks can improve cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer patients.

It is believed that CRF symptoms may be caused by the increase of pro-inflammatory factors in the body. Mind-body exercise may promote the skeletal muscles’ production of chemical signals inhibitory to the production of those inflammatory factors, thereby reducing the CRF in breast cancer patients.
