Exercise and Diet Improves Quality Of Life in Obese Breast Cancer Survivors

It has been known that obesity is associated with poor health-related quality of life in survivors of breast cancer. A study published in the journal Cancer aimed to understand and quantify the health benefits of diet and exercise interventions in breast cancer survivors who were obese and overweight.

For this trial, 351 survivors of breast cancer who were overweight or obese were randomized into 4 different treatment groups, for nearly a year (52 weeks). These groups were control, exercise alone, diet alone, or exercise plus diet.

The participants were surveyed on their health related quality of life based at the beginning to establish a baseline and at week 52 to estimate treatment difference.

The results show that compared to the control group, exercise alone did not impact the quality of life. It was noted that diet alone improved some metrics of the quality of life, however, the group that had exercise plus diet showed improvement in physical functioning and other vitality subscales.

According to this study, the survivors of breast cancer who were overweight or obese with exercise plus improved diet, showed and experienced most improvement in health related quality of life.
