A recent study published in the journal ‘JAMA Network Open’ found that, there was a positive association between family history of breast cancer (FHBC) with higher mammography breast density in pre-menopausal women.

Breast cancer is associated with genetic factors. Mammographic breast density and breast cancer have similar genetic pathways. The main objective of this study was to find the relation between FHBC and mammographic breast density in pre-menopausal women. The study included pre-menopausal women with FHBC and no FHBC. A comparative study was done to measure mammographic breast density.

The results of the study indicated that pre-menopausal women with FHBC showed high mammographic breast density than compared to those with no FHBC.

Hence, the results conclude that mammographic breast density was higher in premenopausal women with FHBC. A dense breast is associated with increased risk of breast cancer. Therefore, it is important to emphasise the importance of starting annual mammography screening at a young age in premenopausal women with FHBC.
